Retired Members Group

Hello! – From the UNISON Oldham Local Government Retired Members Group

Our Group meets every third Friday of each month (10.30 a.m.) at the Branch Office, 16, Manchester Chambers, Manchester Street, Oldham, OL1 1LF.

The Group is a friendly and cheerful set of former Local Government employees who enjoy the company of other enthusiastic, interesting and outgoing people. Being a member is another way of making new friends.

Our Social Secretary compiles an annual calendar of events. Previous calendars have included speakers from Mountain Rescue, Samaritans, Emmaus Homeless Organisation, Oldham Leisure Centre, Trading Standards, Healthwatch, Dementia Awareness and others. We have also had speakers such as Angela Rayner M.P, Sister Isabella (Sex Trafficking), Terry Jackson (The origins of the First World War) and Ann Ashton (Notable Lancashire Women).  We have visited Rochdale Fire Service Museum, Rochdale Pioneers Museum, Holmfirth Winery, The Working-Class Museum and Cornerstones Homeless Charity and are currently planning to visit the Jewish Museum in Manchester. The calendar includes our annual Xmas Meal at a local restaurant or pub. Having previously had a showing of the inspirational film ‘Spirit of ‘45’by the director Ken Loach we are planning a showing of ‘I Daniel Blake’ in the near future. This is another masterpiece by that same director. Our calendar for 2018/19 looks very promising and will be included in this section of the website when fully compiled.

As well as additional regular meetings for Retired Members at Arena Point (Unison Regional Office in Manchester) our members also attend Unison Retired Members Conferences and the National Pensioners Convention Annual Conference in Blackpool. At the time of writing, two of our members are on the North West Region Retired Members Committee where they can represent the views of our Group

Besides being involved in Unison campaigns of special interest to Retired Members, our Group is keen to assist the Branch Office in their valuable work in fighting for the rights of working members.

Interested in joining us ???? …. you can get details by phoning the Branch Office – 0161 770 4008 or by emailing – You will be made very welcome indeed. The office can give you details on how to become a Unison Retired Member (if you are not already).  Looking forward to seeing you in the near future.

Sylvia Dempster, Retired Members Secretary
